4 critical observations from Commanders 2024 minicamp Day 1
By Dean Jones
Commanders' blossoming connection
Jayden Daniels wasted no time in stamping his mark on the Washington Commanders. Big things are expected of the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. The quarterback used this as motivation to slot in seamlessly and earn the respect of veteran teammates in double-quick time.
Washington's first mandatory minicamp session was largely positive from Daniels. There was an interception when Jeremy Chinn made an outstanding play according to those in attendance. Aside from that, it was another positive step in the right direction.
Daniels' chemistry with wide receiver Terry McLaurin is integral to any early success he generates. The veteran Pro Bowler is the team's best pass-catcher and undisputed locker-room leader on offense. He's also been highly impressed with his new quarterback's work ethic and humble approach based on comments via the team's website.
"I don't think I've had a young quarterback that really has come in and within the first week be like, 'Hey, can we get this rep?' or 'Can we get this rep after practice?' It's exciting for me, because that opens the door … There's an open door of communication, and he's not afraid to get that work in. He's humble, but he's confident in his ability. He's played at the highest level. He's played against really good competition, and he knows that he can make all the throws. He's not putting the cart before the horse. He's literally taking this thing day-by-day."

This cannot be seen as anything other than positive. Daniels has the tools needed to become a franchise-altering presence under center. That'll only get him so far. This is why putting in the hard yards and preparing effectively is equally important throughout his pivotal transition.
McLaurin and others seem suitably impressed with Daniels. His adjustment's going smoothly. However, there is much hard work ahead in pursuit of potentially taking the league by storm in 2024.
