Commanders OL Nick Gates setting the tone

The Washington Commanders are slowly molding the pieces to what will hopefully be a much-improved campaign for the offensive line in 2023. Ron Rivera and his staff are working without starting left tackle Charles Leno Jr. at OTAs, but that hasn't stopped others from stepping up and making their presence felt over the first two days.

One player, in particular, is Nick Gates. The Commanders thought enough of the veteran to make him one of their top priorities in 2023 free agency and based on his overall attitude so far, he's keen to repay this faith.

According to those in attendance, Gates was vocal in the huddle, enthusiastic, and brought a level of energy that didn't go unnoticed. He's also taking first-team reps as Washington's starting center after the team released Chase Roullier with a post-June 1 designation.

Gates has had his fair share of injury problems in recent years, but the talent is there for all to see. He also has leadership traits that cannot be taught - which is going to be a huge asset to call upon throughout inevitable times of struggle.

It remains to be seen whether the protection can make the strides needed to become productive. But if Gates has his way, it won't be for the lack of trying across the board.
