Despite speculation to the contrary, the Washington Commanders opted to stand pat with their tight-end options heading into the 2023 season. A decision that could come back to haunt those in power considering the questions surrounding their current options.

While there is a lot to like about Cole Turner and Armani Rogers making significant strides under Eric Bieniemy, nobody could say for sure. John Bates is seen more as a blocking specialist and Logan Thomas also has some doubts to alleviate after a frustrating last two seasons.

Injuries haven't helped Thomas' cause. But he is being paid handsomely compared to most suspect tight-end performers around the league, so the need to return to something like his 2020 form is an urgent one.

Thomas currently sits No. 1 on the depth chart by a comfortable margin, one suspects. Bieniemy loves big, athletic tight ends within his system, so this could be a match made in heaven if there are no more complications on the health front.

However, if Thomas cannot produce the goods and one of the young upstarts emerges - which is entirely possible - the former quarterback could find himself on the fringes or off the team entirely given the savings involved with his early release.
