Commanders could trade for Justin Fields

As previously mentioned, not solving the quarterback spot effectively was arguably the biggest flaw of Ron Rivera's tenure. Some failed trades, suspect free-agent signings, and piling too much pressure on Sam Howell left Josh Harris' ownership group with no option other than to make the head coach surplus to requirements.

The Commanders cannot make the same mistakes again. All signs point to the Commanders using the No. 2 overall selection on someone like Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels. That said, every and all options should be considered.

If the Chicago Bears stand pat and take Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall, that immediately makes Justin Fields a highly valuable trade commodity. The former Ohio State star flashed promise in difficult circumstances once again last season. His production is far from perfect, but it was another step in the right direction.

There would be no shortage of suitors for Fields if the Bears went in a different direction. The Commanders have the draft capital on Day 2 to make this move. What Adam Peters needs to figure out is whether he'd be a better option than one of the aforementioned college prospects.

Fields is also looking for a contract extension sooner rather than later. That's not going to be cheap. This - above all else looking at Peters' intentions as a primary roster builder in Washington - makes trading for the dual-threat signal-caller a gamble of epic proportions.

Nothing can be ruled out right now. But this does seem unlikely.
