What matchups are worth keeping a close eye on when the Washington Commanders lock horns with the Baltimore Ravens in Preseason Week 2?

With two days of joint practices in the books, the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders are set to square on Monday night live on ESPN. This is the first game at FedEx Field since Dan Snyder sold the franchise to Josh Harris' ownership group.

There is a lot of excitement. But for the Commanders to take the next step, these are the type of situations that can bring the best out of this team.

Key matchups going into Monday could be make-or-break for certain players looking for roster spots or prominent involvement next season. So let's break down some key factors.

Commanders QB Sam Howell vs. Ravens defense

Now that Ron Rivera has named Sam Howell the starter for the upcoming season, the hard work starts. The players have expressed confidence and have seen the work that the quarterback has put in, but he knows the magnitude of the challenge ahead.

Howell will see multiple looks from the Ravens' defense in this one - much different from the ones in joint practice. How will he adjust and will the signal-caller start off slow again?

The Ravens have seen Howell and come after him. You can see how quickly the North Carolina product gets the ball out of his hand. He definitely has made some eye-popping throws almost Patrick Mahomes like in practice, so keeping the defense off balance will be the key.

How much Howell plays in tonight's game remains to be seen. My guess is the first half, depending on how fast the Washington Commanders start off.
