Commanders could sign Christian Kirksey (LB)

The Washington Commanders haven't done much to strengthen their defensive second level throughout one of the most memorable offseasons in franchise history. Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio seem happy enough to stand pat, which indicates one or two linebacker sets are coming more prominently this season unless someone like Khaleke Hudson emerges as a genuine difference-maker.

This could be a recipe for success given the two new defensive backs and the potential for a five-man defensive front wreaking havoc. But it does nothing to detract from what complications might emerge if poor form or injury hits the linebacking corps of which options are incredibly bare.

Adding someone like Christian Kirksey would alleviate these concerns. The former third-round selection was a shock release by the Houston Texans on Monday as new head coach DeMeco Ryans looks to go younger and more dynamic across the board, but he should generate significant interest despite being on the wrong side of 30 years old.

Kirksey's availability should provoke a discussion within the Commanders. One could even make a strong case for the player being an upgrade over projected starter Cody Barton all things considered.

This is a proven performer who attained 124 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions last season. Kirksey's leadership within the locker room is something else that could assist greatly during such an important campaign, so the benefits are there for all to see.
