3 Commanders role players to benefit most from Sam Howell as QB1 in 2023
By Dean Jones
Antonio Gibson - Commanders RB
Even though Antonio Gibson looks set to begin the 2023 season behind Brian Robinson Jr. on the running back depth chart, the fourth-year pro promises to play a pivotal role within Eric Bieiemy's scheme. And heading into a contract year, how he performs will go a long way to determining his future beyond the upcoming campaign.
Ron Rivera recently stated that he would like to see Gibson get more touches. With J.D. McKissic released with a failed physical designation earlier this offseason, the former Memphis standout might see prominent action as Washington's primary backfield pass-catcher if everything goes well throughout the team's 2023 preparations.
This all starts by developing cohesion with Sam Howell, learning Bieniemy's concepts, and displaying assured route running coupled with reliable hands for good measure.
With 894 receiving yards over his first three seasons, there's nothing to suggest Gibson cannot reach the aforementioned objectives. The presence of Bieniemy and a more creative offensive system only open things up further regarding how the player might be deployed.
Every NFL team needs a committee running back approach these days. If Robinson and Gibson understand their respective responsibilities, the Commanders and Howell have a dynamic one-two punch to depend upon in 2023.
