Sam Howell - Commanders QB

Sam Howell has been a beacon of light while all around him seemingly crumbles this season. The quarterback looks like he could become a franchise-caliber presence under center. However, it's tough to know which way the Washington Commanders are going to go with so many big changes on the immediate horizon.

Howell has some growing left to do mechanically and from a decision-making standpoint. One could argue he's done better than expected. Especially considering the offensive line's pathetic protection has the former fifth-round selection on course to break the single-season sacks-against record.

The Commanders could have a top-three selection in the 2024 NFL Draft if their turbulent form continues. This puts a quarterback squarely in play. Howell finishing the campaign strongly is imperative to boost his credentials further before a new coaching staff comes into the fold.

Some fans believe Howell deserves a proper evaluation with a better-supporting cast. Others feel like the decision should be made by a head coach/general manager combination who'll have an unbiased view of the player's production.

Looking at the Commanders' upcoming opponents, some tough challenges await. If Howell can come through them relatively unscathed and finish in the top five for passing yards along the way, it'll stand him in tremendous stead.

Anything less could see the Commanders make another switch at football's most critical position.
