Most intriguing Commanders post-football career

  • Heath Shuler

I was sorely tempted to pick A.J. Francis, who now operates under the name Top Dolla in the WWE. But he still has a long way to go to equal the post-football careers of players like Vince Promuto, who became a DEA official after retiring from football, or Mark Murphy, who currently serves as CEO of the Green Bay Packers.

Then there’s Heath Shuler – a punchline for most long-time Washington Commanders fans, whose flameout as a player coincides with the onset of the downturn in the team's football fortune.

Shuler went on to become US Congressman, which is no small feat. He joined another failed NFL quarterback, J.C. Watts, along with Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Largent to offer some athleticism to the House of Representatives.

Shule was undefeated in his electoral career, winning three terms, before redistricting in North Carolina caused him to abandon politics.

A colorful cast of characters with achievements both on-field and off. They help make up the rich history of a proud franchise that will now begin to recover from decades of mismanagement. Not the best players or achievements, perhaps, but all of them are worth remembering.
