Bobby Wagner was a pivotal signing for the Washington Commanders in 2024. The veteran linebacker led by example and became a driving force behind the team's culture shift. This didn't go unnoticed by a legendary head coach who's achieved considerable success with the player previously.
Wagner was arguably the most important addition behind head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels. He set the tone on and off the field. He taught everyone how to adopt a winning mindset and led by example. The former second-round pick formed a dynamic second-level partnership with Frankie Luvu — something that resulted in both getting second-team All-Pro honors.
Although Wagner isn't getting any younger at 35 years old, it's evident there is still some good football left. He's not a sideline-too-sideline force these days, but his communication and football IQ allow him to make a big difference. The Commanders should make an effort to keep him around. At the same time, the Utah State product won't be short of offers if he's free to test the market.
Pete Carroll is a known admirer of Wagner's from their prolific spell working together with the Seattle Seahawks. He's back in the NFL as Las Vegas Raiders head coach. The AFC West team also needs a cultural reset after Antonio Pierce's time with the organization ended up being short-lived.
Pete Carroll lauds Bobby Wagner's instant impact on Commanders' culture
Carroll was inevitably asked about Wagner during his media availability at the NFL Scouting Combine. The coach lauded his contribution, especially installing Quinn's ethos into the locker room and forming an invaluable relationship with Jayden Daniels. There was also an acknowledgment that the perennial All-Pro is a free agent, and the smirk at the end of his statement spoke volumes.
"The incredible season he had in many ways. I know he was a great asset to Dan [Quinn] putting together the system, the approach, and the principles. We all kinda grew up in the same ways. So the message and the voice that Bobby [Wagner] had on that club, particularly with the quarterback — the relationship that he's established — is irreplaceable for them. I know Bobby is… Bobby is a free agent…"Pete Carroll via NBC Washington

Carroll might have been playing games with the media. Even so, the wry smile from the wily old veteran could indicate the Raiders will make a play for Wagner if the Commanders let things get that far.
It's all about what motivates Wagner too.
Adam Peters said he's going to let certain players take the lead regarding their futures. Some want to be signed before free agency. Others want to test the market and find out their true value. Where the future first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer lies hasn't been disclosed. Reuniting with Carroll could be a tempting proposition if the Commanders and his representatives cannot reach a contract compromise.
The positives of Wagner re-signing with the Commanders far outweigh the negatives. Peters must find another dynamic linebacker at some stage in the event his production dips significantly — Father Time is undefeated, after all. He'll also have a price in mind and won't want to overpay too much. Finding the right balance is crucial.
If Wagner isn't happy with the terms or wants a fresh challenge, don't be surprised if one of the first calls he receives comes from the coach he won a Super Bowl with in Seattle.
