The Washington Commanders haven't seen projected starting center Nick Allegretti since he left the field early on the opening day of training camp. He is reportedly dealing with a calf injury, but head coach Dan Quinn had some promising news to share before practice on Day 11.
While Quinn confirmed that Allegretti would not participate in joint practices with the Miami Dolphins or Washington's preseason opener against the AFC East club this week, the Commanders are hoping the Illinois product can practice when they get back down to business on Sunday.
And considering how others behind Allegretti on the depth chart have failed to meet expectations in his absence, this is a massive relief.

The Commanders took a monumental risk this offseason by releasing starting center Tyler Biadasz, who is already impressing with the Los Angeles Chargers. Those in power were confident Allegretti had the tools to fill the void, but missing time at camp exposed the glaring lack of legitimate depth behind him.

With five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil also out long-term with a torn triceps, which could even result in him missing the entire season, Allegretti's role as the anchor becomes even more integral. And time is of the essence to develop the chemistry needed within new blocking concepts.
If everything goes according to plan, Allegretti will be on the practice field on Sunday. That gives him a couple of preseason games and a little under a month to firmly find his feet before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders will still manage his return carefully, but all signs point to his full involvement when it comes to the crunch.
Allegretti was spotted doing some individual work on the sideline in readiness for more difficult upcoming challenges. It was a massive scare, given how important he is to the team's plans, but thankfully, his imminent return should alleviate any remaining fears.

Whether Allegretti can provide the consistency needed is another matter.

The three-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs looks well-suited to the outside zone blocking concepts being installed by offensive coordinator David Blough. However, Allegretti's production over his first two seasons in Washington has been inconsistent at best.
Allegretti failed to lock down the left guard position. He switched to the right but was benched after just two games in 2025. Things tailed off dramatically, but the glimmer of hope displayed at center when deputizing for Biadasz late in the campaign was enough to turn the tide.
The Commanders have faith in Allegretti, even giving him a new contract extension ahead of time. They have pushed their chips into the middle, and everyone is hoping for this faith to be repaid in full.
Missing time in the summer won't be much of a big deal if Allegretti manages to make the position his own. And at this stage, erring on the side of caution was (and remains) the right course of action.
But if Allegretti fluffs his lines, the Commanders will have a much graver problem on their hands.
And that is not going to look favorably on Peters if this scenario becomes reality.
