The signs are not good.

General manager Adam Peters doesn't have the first clue how things could unfold before the Washington Commanders go on the clock at No. 7 overall. There are many unknowns, so panicking in the complete chaos is not an option.

Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a theory. Peters doesn't believe the rumors and hearsay. It's lying season around the league as everyone looks to gain an upper hand, but there should be some decent prospects available when it's Washington's turn to pick.

One AFC East area scout believes there could be a sensible solution for the Commanders if they avoid the temptation of trading back. Unfortunately, his dream choice for Washington may already be dead if the recent speculation is any indication.

AFC scout has Commanders taking Sonny Styles, but availability is questionable

The scout had the Commanders taking Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles. Head coach Dan Quinn's value on linebackers could tip the scales. The prospect's ability to impact the game in all phases, coupled with his unique athleticism, makes this a tempting proposition for Washington.

"The Commanders don't have one glaring need, and in a draft light on blue-chip talent, it's tempting to trade back and get more capital instead of debating between a non-premium position or maybe drafting a third cornerback.

"Dan Quinn knows the value of a linebacker with range and playmaking ability -- it's why he signed Bobby Wagner. [Sonny] Styles has that athletic ability, but he's 6-foot-5, eliminates passing windows, and he's a capable blitzer, too."

The Commanders have spoken highly of Styles throughout their pre-draft assessments. This couldn't be dismissed, despite Washington already having Frankie Luvu, Jordan Magee, and free-agent signing Leo Chenal. However, there is one big problem that the scout overlooked.

Styles' momentum has never been higher. His stock is soaring. It's not a draft where positional value is as important, so the chances of him being available to Washington are becoming increasingly remote.

There is a good chance Styles will be taken in the top five. Whether that's by a team in the spot or with someone trading up for the privilege remains to be seen, but it's a legitimate factor. And with no real ammunition to be aggressive, it'll be a waiting game for Peters.

In truth, nobody really knows what Peters has planned. The Commanders' skill positions around quarterback Jayden Daniels need an injection of dynamism, regardless of whether Brandon Aiyuk comes on board or not. That won't be going unnoticed, but Washington won't be picking for needs alone.

It's about flexibility. Having Styles would be nice, but the Commanders' unique position means nothing should be completely dismissed.

Buckle up.
