Adam Peters managed to get some good returns from the 2025 NFL Draft despite the limited resources available. The roster looks better now than before the all-important selection event, which is all fans could ask for with five picks at the team's disposal.
The Washington Commanders have removed any sentiment from their decision-making process. Peters is all about finding the best players regardless of need. If he has to upset some already-established stars to do it, that's a risk he's rightfully willing to take.
One intriguing development could place a recently acquired veteran on thin ice before preparations for the 2025 campaign gather pace.
Surrounding quarterback Jayden Daniels with everything needed to thrive further was the key objective this offseason. Peters recognized that the team's Super Bowl window was open and maximizing his rookie contract was crucial. This strategy continued during the draft, with three of the five picks focused on the offense.
The Commanders added a starting-caliber offensive tackle (Josh Conerly Jr.) to go opposite Laremy Tunsil. They acquired an intriguing running back who had his final college campaign stolen by the NCAA (Jacory Croskey-Merritt). Those in power also took another explosive wide receiver in Virginia Tech standout Jaylin Lane.
Lane can get open over short-to-intermediate routes. He's got the speed to stretch the field when needed, which also makes him an elusive threat in the return game. Improving his play strength will help, but that should be a simple exercise once Washington's accomplished staff start to work their magic.
Commanders need Michael Gallup to hit the ground running this summer
What this means for Michael Gallup's future is anyone's guess. The Commanders coaxed the player out of retirement this offseason after he spent 2024 away from the gridiron. This returned his focus and hunger after becoming disillusioned once his time with the Dallas Cowboys concluded.
Gallup has proven production and the trust of Dan Quinn. However, his signing comes with no guarantees regarding a roster spot or prominent involvement. He must prove himself all over again, and Lane's presence complicates matters.
Lane and Gallup have similar traits. There's a chance both go through onto the roster, but they'll have to fight for everything.
Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel Sr., and Noah Brown are roster locks. The same goes for Luke McCaffrey, who can hopefully build on his rookie flashes in pursuit of a bigger role. Lane will make the team in some capacity, which leaves room for one more if Washington takes six wideouts through onto the squad.
That would leave Gallup fighting it out for the sixth and final position. K.J. Osborn and Mike Strachan will also fancy their chances. One couldn't dismiss the possibility of undrafted free agent Ja'Corey Brooks surging into consideration upon further examination of his college production.
It's a fascinating element for fans to monitor throughout the offseason. But make no mistake, Gallup is not a lock to make the team by any stretch following Lane's arrival.
