Luke McCaffrey focused on bigger picture as Commanders' breakout awaits

Washington Commanders fans are still awaiting Luke McCaffrey to have a genuine breakout game. The rookie wide receiver remains one of the league's best separators according to statistics from Pro Football Focus. However, this hasn't come with many targets despite the player's impressive early dependability.

McCaffrey has a 100 percent catch success rate, bringing in all 11 of his targets for 103 receiving yards and five first downs. He's proving worthy of more involvement in the passing game, so it won't be much longer before he becomes a focal point if the same trend continues.

The No. 100 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft got just one target at the Baltimore Ravens for five receiving yards. Washington's offense is functioning well despite McCaffrey's lack of influence, so biding his time and continuing to make the improvements needed to step up when the time comes is key.

Washington's offensive coaching staff is taking its time with McCaffrey. He's featured on 50 percent of offensive snaps so far, which isn't surprising when one considers he had just two years of experience as a wide receiver in college. This is a development year for the first-year pro, although the initial signs are immensely encouraging.

McCaffrey acknowledged this is a growing process between him and fellow rookie Jayden Daniels when speaking to Scott Abraham from 7 News DC. Enhancing their blossoming connection, improving knowledge of pro-style defensive concepts, and taking advantage of every opportunity are the wideout's primary objectives. After that, everything else should fall into place.

"I think it grows all the time. I think you grow as a player, you both get better, and you both learn from experience. It's so cool this whole year - whether it's OTAs, training camp, or until now - to continue to build that bank over and over. And hopefully, a couple of years down the line, you have a pretty thick booklet of plays and looks that you've seen. So we're just continuing to build that. Continuing to grow. Football is a constant game of just getting better. Take every rep with the seriousness and intent fullness that you need to. It's been cool to get better and I'm excited to see where this team can go."

This is the correct mindset. McCaffrey is proving his worth as a hard worker and reliable pass-catcher. That's a solid foundation from which to build heading into a favorable Week 7 matchup against the Carolina Panthers at Northwest Stadium.

The Panthers don't have the best defense, which is being kind. Daniels and the offense should be able to get whatever they want if the focus remains the same and complacency doesn't come into the equation. McCaffrey knows how to get open and find soft spots in zones. That should be utilized heavily in the face of a defense that plays more Cover 3 than anyone in the league.

What better time to break out than versus the team that drafted his brother Christian McCaffrey at No. 8 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft and traded him to the San Francisco 49ers?

McCaffrey has the talent, he's displayed that in limited involvement. Perhaps this weekend is the time offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury lets him loose to see how he fares as a primary weapon in the passing game.

If not, McCaffrey will keep pushing forward in his quest to earn the complete trust of Daniels and his coaches.
