The Washington Commanders fell on the road to the Philadelphia Eagles in their season opener, but they put up a strong fight in a game that came down to a botched late two-point conversion attempt. But for wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, it represented another blow to his fading hopes.
Washington's youngsters impressed at Lincoln Financial Field, most notably third-round rookie Antonio Williams. He led the team in receiving yards (64) and had the late touchdown to set up the ill-fated final play.
As for McCaffrey? He didn't even suit up.

After having his sophomore campaign shortened due to a broken collarbone, the third-year pro was a healthy scratch for the Commanders in the loss. After Williams' performance, it may be difficult for him to earn his role back.
McCaffrey was making strides in Year 2 of his professional career before it came to an abrupt halt, and he was considered a roster lock for that reason as well as for his strength as a kick returner. But against the Eagles, Washington elected to suit up only five wideouts, with Treylon Burks inactive as well.
Second-year special teams ace Jaylin Lane returned both punts and kicks. Dyami Brown is also clearly ahead of McCaffrey in the pecking order.
For a player Washington was counting on to take a step forward this year, that's not a good sign.
At this point, we have to start wondering what the future holds for McCaffrey. This season was considered make-or-break for the Rice product, and it's starting off in the worst way possible.
Luke McCaffrey might now be fighting a losing battle with the Washington Commanders
When McCaffrey was drafted No. 100 overall in 2024, everybody preached patience because he had only transitioned from quarterback to receiver two years prior. He was viewed as a two-to-three-year project who might take some time, but would eventually be worth the risk.
It's now Year 3, and his role has diminished.
Due to the additions of Williams and Stefon Diggs, he's been buried on the depth chart as the sixth or seventh man. Unless someone ahead of McCaffrey gets injured, which nobody wants to see, he's going to have a hard time getting on the field this year.
All in all, McCaffrey is more a victim of circumstances than anything else.
Had he not had last season cut short, McCaffrey might have been able to develop enough to enter this season firmly entrenched as a rotational piece. But instead, he's watching at least the start of the year from the bench.
There are no more guarantees that McCaffrey will get another chance to redeem himself in Washington. And if a suitable offer arrives before the trade deadline, general manager Adam Peters might just consider it.
The logic was there with his selection, but now the team looks to be all but waving the white flag.
