Tyler Biadasz got a head start on free agency after the starting center was released by the Washington Commanders with one year remaining on his deal. To say it was a shocking development would be an understatement.
This was a surprising move that fans continue to question. However, general manager Adam Peters and the coaching staff clearly feel they can improve production by shifting schematic concepts under new offensive coordinator David Blough.
This immediately becomes one of Washington's biggest needs. The chemistry between the quarterback and center is integral to offensive efficiency. Jayden Daniels developed a strong on-field connection to Biadasz, which made his departure even more stunning. It also means Peters' next move couldn't be more pivotal.
Logan Paulsen touts Day 3 draft gem as Commanders' long-term center option
Fans are expecting some sort of movement in free agency. There are several intriguing candidates set to hit the market, led by Tyler Linderbaum if the Baltimore Ravens don't get a deal done beforehand. This is also expected to be a pretty deep draft class for the center position, which would easily be the best (and cheapest) option if Peters can somehow find a hidden gem.
Logan Paulsen believes he may have found the rough diamond capable of providing the Commanders with long-term security at the position.
The former Washington tight end, who now works as an analyst for the club, touted Trey Zuhn III out of Texas A&M as a possible option a little further down the pecking order. He's expected to be a Day 3 selection, which makes the versatile lineman attainable for Peters, who has four picks in the final three rounds.
Zuhn spent time on the edge earlier in his career before moving to the center spot. He's a large human with the size, mass, and heavy hands needed to make a smooth transition. While his arm length isn't ideal, he compensates for this with outstanding technique and a mauler mentality on running plays that the Commanders desperately need.
As with most Day 3 picks, there are concerns. Zuhn needs to bolster his play strength. There is more consistency required in his hand placement immediately after the snap. The football IQ is high, so there is scope for further improvements. Simply put, this would be an enticing project for new Washington offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to mold accordingly.
Even if the Commanders draft Zuhn or another center prospect, there is still a desire to find a veteran capable of slotting into the lineup immediately.
Nick Allegretti seems like the only realistic in-house candidate. Brandon Coleman has been taking some snaps at center in practice, according to head coach Dan Quinn. Even so, he may be needed at left guard if Chris Paul leaves in free agency.
Regardless, Peters has to get his next moves at the center spot right. Otherwise, the Commanders have a massive problem on their hands.
