Commanders' abrupt Tyler Biadasz release may have just saved veteran’s job

There is a clear winner from this move.

The Washington Commanders sent shockwaves through their fan base by releasing starting center Tyler Biadasz. Reasons haven't been confirmed, but it's a big call to make heading into such a critical offseason.

Biadasz was a solid pro. He's dependable, still in his prime, and emerged as a stable presence despite missing the end of 2025 due to injury. It also leaves another starting spot to figure out, and the Commanders better have a concise plan of action that ensures no momentum along the offensive line is lost.

Everything is still up in the air. But for one veteran who looked almost down and out just a few short weeks ago, Biadasz's departure could potentially provide a lifeline when hope was fading rapidly.

Commanders releasing Tyler Biadasz could be a vote of confidence in Nick Allegretti

There was no bigger beneficiary of Biadasz going down to end the campaign than Nick Allegretti. The 2024 free-agent signing from the Kansas City Chiefs didn't shine at either guard position. He was benched after just two games in 2025, going to the fringes as an emergency option and not much else.

However, one final opportunity to shine arrived at the center position almost by default. Allegretti seized the moment, performing relatively well to end the season on a positive note. Despite this, the Illinois product was tabbed as a potential salary-cap casualty. Now, that is less likely than ever.

As things stand — and there is a long way to go and many moves to make — Allegretti is the best center on the roster. That's a sad state of affairs, but general manager Adam Peters is not going to stand pat.

At the very least, competition is coming. But those in power may have been suitably impressed by Allegretti's performance over the final two games to see if further growth can arrive with a full offseason to get familiar with the position's demands.

There is simply no way to tell for sure right now. This came way out of leftfield. Team insiders were speculating whether Biadasz would get a new deal in advance. Instead, he was released, so nobody outside the inner circle has any clue about what's going on.

A scenario could still emerge where Allegretti is cut. Significant acquisitions need to be sought before that. Biadasz leaves a gaping hole that must be filled, and even though Peters might be thinking a little bigger, retaining the Super Bowl winner at least covers his bases before free agency.

The ripple effects are obvious. But until those in power come clean, everything else is a guessing game.
