The Washington Commanders have countless important decisions to make this offseason. Fans are excited to see what new faces come into the fold during Adam Peters' latest roster regeneration. The general manager also has some tricky conundrums to solve with those who put on the uniform this season.
Free agents demand Peters' urgent attention. Hype is growing about five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil getting a contract extension ahead of time, but a respected team insider also pointed to another established veteran who could be in line for a new deal.
It's a little more contentious than Tunsil. However, it makes some sense as part of a bigger-picture outlook.
Commanders could consider giving Tyler Biadasz a contract extension this offseason
Nicki Jhabvala from The Athletic thought the Commanders could lock down starting center Tyler Biadasz at some stage this offseason. He's heading into the final year of his deal, and tying him up long-term would give quarterback Jayden Daniels even more stability beyond 2026.
"The Commanders also need to lock up their center for the long term to keep their front five intact for years to come, and to provide [Jayden] Daniels some continuity. Biadasz has a $1 million roster bonus due April 1 and carries an $11 million salary cap hit for 2026."Nicki Jhabvala
Biadasz is a solid player. He's been a dependable presence over the last two seasons, communicating pre-snap and effectively blending run blocking and pass protection. While the former Wisconsin standout isn't a world-beater by any stretch, the Commanders could do a lot worse.
At 28, Biadasz has a lot of good football left. Dan Quinn knows him well from their time together on the Dallas Cowboys, and he made the lineman one of his most pressing targets in 2024 free agency. He's done nothing to suggest he isn't deserving of a new contract. What the Commanders need to figure out is whether he is worth it while there is still time to run on his current deal.
Getting Biadasz extended this offseason would also get this year's cap number down. According to Over the Cap, this would save the Commanders $5.46 million. Looking at the holes across Washington's roster, that extra cash could definitely be put to good use.
This wouldn't be high on Peters' list of priorities. But once the dust settles and the Commanders have the space to consider things a little further down the list, working out an extension with Biadasz should be pretty easy if both parties are willing.
If not, Biadasz has one more year to audition for a longer-term commitment in Washington.
