It took Jeremy Chinn a couple of weeks to adjust to his new surroundings. However, the Washington Commanders' enhanced coaching staff must be thrilled by what they've seen from the versatile defensive piece since then.
Chinn came into the Commanders with a massive point to prove. He quickly became an afterthought under Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero despite a starring rookie campaign in 2020. The former second-round selection saw his snap percentage reduce considerably in the final year of his deal. A fresh start was almost guaranteed from a long way out - something he wasn't going to waste.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Chinn used this as an extra source of motivation. He also landed in the right spot after penning a one-year, prove-it deal with the Commanders, reportedly turning down more money from the Pittsburgh Steelers to become part of Dan Quinn's exciting project.
Washington laid out an objective for Chinn this season. Play well, establish himself as a consistent presence on the backend alongside Quan Martin, and a new deal won't be too far behind. That's exactly what the player is accomplishing over the first half of 2024.
Commanders got sensational first-half production from Jeremy Chinn in Week 9
Chinn is flourishing within Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr.'s scheme. His first-half performance against the New York Giants in Week 9 was further proof. It also bolstered the Southern Illinois product's chances of getting a longer-term commitment from the franchise.
He was nothing short of sensational to start the contest. Chinn came up with two huge stops early on before an incredible pass breakup in the second quarter when it looked like the Giants could be in line for a big gain. This was one of the big concerns upon his arrival in Washington, so it's fantastic to see.
The Commanders thought Chinn's explosiveness and natural instincts could be a huge asset in Year 1 of this substantial rebuilding project. This faith is being repaid in no uncertain terms. It also looks like the latest in a long line of exceptional acquisitions made by those in power throughout the offseason.
If the same trend continues in the coming weeks, getting a new contract worked out with Chinn will be one of the easiest decisions general manager Adam Peters is going to make as part of his plans for sustainable progress.
