Jayden Daniels got the chance to address the media again after the Washington Commanders' overtime debacle against the New York Giants. And his comments proved just why he is the man to lead this franchise long term.
It would have been easy for Daniels to pass the buck. Head coach Dan Quinn has willingly taken the bullets, and the locker room hasn't missed it. That matters especially with his quarterback, who has been well insulated from the criticism coming his way.
That matters greatly. But for Daniels, he was man enough to step up and accept his role in the team's complete failure.
Jayden Daniels' accountability matters in the Commanders' locker room
This is the sign of every great leader.
The willingness to hold yourself accountable is integral. Everyone makes mistakes, and some blame others. Daniels took the other route, even speaking in front of the team to acknowledge his failures and assure them it wouldn't happen again.
This was a collective botch. Quinn was man enough to be front and center, but so was Daniels. That's a sign of personal growth, and it's one of the many reasons Washington chose him at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Daniels knows his lapse in judgment and lack of urgency fell far short of the required standard. He said it didn't matter what the coaches do or don't do. He's the one on the field, and the dual-threat lost his composure at the worst possible moment.
"Don't even put it on the coaches. I gotta be...more aware, go out there and manage the game. And I did not do that, so it doesn't matter what happens on the sideline between the coaches or anything like that. I gotta notice everything that's happening and make sure that we're in the right situation to win the football game."
And now, everyone can finally turn the page.
Commanders' belief in Jayden Daniels has only grown in recent days
With the Commanders facing a daunting Monday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers, focusing on the next challenge is crucial. After all, any further failings will be punished by a team in red-hot form right now.
Aside from his monumental flop to end the game, Daniels made a hugely encouraging return to the lineup. He looked dynamic as a rusher, showed no ill effects from wearing an elbow brace, and got the football to his playmakers in difficult conditions.
It went largely overlooked in the circumstances, but it was encouraging.
And the leadership Daniels has shown, both publicly and inside the building since the overtime disaster, is even more impressive.
This is what the Commanders need. Things are not going well right now, and it'll take collective resolve to put things right. Daniels is at the forefront, and everyone else should be following his lead.
If anything, this blunder should make everyone even more determined to turn the tide.
The Commanders have their backs against the wall. Nobody expects them to be anything more than also-rans, and most have concluded that Quinn is living on borrowed time. That won't be the case in-house, and certainly not if Daniels has anything to do with it.
Daniels has shown fans a lot in recent days. And it's only affirmed belief.
