It's been an eventful start to the offseason.

Commanders fired OL coach Bobby Johnson

Parting ways with both coordinators was a drastic measure from head coach Dan Quinn. However, the wailing of the axe didn't stop there.

The Washington Commanders also fired offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. This was probably the most shocking of all, especially given that protection emerged as the only real area of positivity throughout another underwhelming campaign.

Johnson gained plaudits for his development of rookie right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. He made changes along the interior when things weren't going well early on, and that patched things up until stud right guard Sam Cosmi returned. The coach also managed to get 2024 third-round pick Brandon Coleman back on the right path to future prosperity, so his removal was an eyebrow-raiser.

Perhaps it was the shift in blocking concepts that led to Johnson's removal. There is no telling for sure, but this is arguably the strangest move Quinn has made up to now.

Commanders promoted David Blough to OC

Fans were looking for the Commanders to make a monumental splash with their new offensive coordinator. Revered names were on the market looking for work. Mike McDaniel was the darling among most team supporters, but head coach Dan Quinn had something else in mind.

In a surprising move, the Commanders promoted David Blough. He's only been a position coach for a few weeks after Tavita Pritchard left for Stanford. The former quarterback was attracting interest from the Detroit Lions, but Washington ensured the bright young mind stayed.

This is a significant leap of faith. The Commanders are confident that Blough has the innovative concepts to take Jayden Daniels' game to the next level. His lack of NFL play-calling — and, to be honest, coaching experience in general — is a major concern. But everyone has to start somewhere.

  • Grade: B

If it doesn't come off, Quinn will likely pay with his job. But the Commanders may be getting ahead of the game, too.

Commanders hired D.J. Williams as QBs coach

Jayden Daniels lost two key allies. Kliff Kingsbury departed, and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard left to become Stanford's new head coach. Promoting David Blough to offensive coordinator retained some continuity around the signal-caller, but more was needed.

Another strong relationship Daniels has within the building is with Doug Williams. The iconic figure became a strong mentor and guide for the No. 2 pick in 2024. And now, his son will be working closely with the former LSU phenom.

The Commanders appointed D.J. Williams to be their next quarterbacks coach. Some fans thought this was a sentimental appointment, which is fine. Even so, this detracts from his outstanding work in the coaching field away from Washington.

Williams began his career with the New Orleans Saints and spent last season as the Atlanta Falcons' quarterbacks coach. He's got experience, and he reportedly blew those in power away during his interview.

Grade: B-

That should be enough to encourage. However, one can also make a strong case that there were better options. Time will tell...
