Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the San Francisco 49ers remains a hot topic of discussion among fans and the media. The Washington Commanders are keeping a close eye on developments, but any fans hoping to see him reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels might be waiting for a while.
The Niners are reportedly going to wait on a decision with Aiyuk. He's still under contract, though general manager John Lynch confirmed that the wide receiver has played his last snap for the club. They are trying to get a trade suitor to come forward, however unlikely that may be.
Reports are going back and forth about what really went down with Aiyuk and San Francisco. George Kittle probably knows more than most, and the two-time All-Pro tight end lifted the lid on Aiyuk's approach before things went completely off the rails.
George Kittle eases Commanders fans' fears about Brandon Aiyuk
During an appearance on Bussin' with the Boys, Kittle revealed that Aiyuk was still working out in the weight room until he wasn't. He remained a strong support system for the player and even received a message from the wideout after his unfortunate injury. There are things above his pay grade that are going on, but this all but removes the bad teammate narrative.
"The last time I saw [Brandon] Aiyuk, he was kinda at training camp, kinda not and then he was in and out of the building throughout the first couple of weeks. Then I started going out to see him in the weight room because he didn’t go into the locker room or the training room anymore. He would just go into the weight room to do his rehab. I would go there and talk to him because he didn’t go to meetings or anything like that.
"I started doing that Week 6, and then a week later, that story came out about all the crazy stuff, and then I didn’t see him again. He did text me after I got hurt and said 'thinking of ya' and I said thanks, dude.”
Perhaps we'll never know what really went down between Aiyuk and the Niners. Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan supposedly wanted an out on his contract, despite the pass-catcher's encouraging rehabilitation. The 2020 first-round pick's actions aren't without blame, with many speculating that he is trying to engineer a move to the Commanders.
As always, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. General manager Adam Peters will have a good lay of the land, and Daniels may also be able to provide him with some inside information as Aiyuk's close friend. The move remains a massive risk, but the rewards would be astronomical if he stays healthy and focused.
Of course, these were the same problems Peters faced before trading for Deebo Samuel Sr. last year. He knew the player well and took a risk. Even though things didn't go well overall for the Commanders, their versatile offensive weapons shone amid the chaos.
Unlike Samuel, landing Aiyuk has long-term upside. But for now, it's a waiting game until further notice.
