Chase Young and the Washington Commanders always looked likely to go their separate ways at some stage. It's taken a while, but the veteran defensive end is finally starting to become the player those in power envisaged before the 2020 NFL Draft.

Young had lofty expectations to meet. He was tabbed as a generational prospect coming out of Ohio State en route to becoming the No. 2 pick. Ron Rivera spurned the chance to draft Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert in favor of the edge rusher. This was one of many regrettable choices, even though it was extremely valid at the time.

He started well in Washington, winning the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Injuries and performance regression took a tumble after that, and the Commanders traded Young to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional third-round selection before the 2023 deadline. That didn't last long, but he's found a home with the New Orleans Saints.

Chase Young is putting together the dominant run Commanders fans wanted

The NFC South club has turned things around after a horrific start to the campaign, and Young is at the forefront. He's logged 5.5 sacks in his last six games, taking his tally to 8.5 on the year. His Week 17 forced fumble, ripping the ball from Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward before taking it into the end zone for a score, was nothing short of phenomenal.

This typified the momentum building around Young. He might never reach the heights expected during his college days, but this is easily the most dominant run of his professional career to date. It also ensures he'll be around in 2026, which comes with a hefty financial pay increase in the penultimate year of his deal.

Nobody shed many tears when Young was traded. His relationship with those in power at the time fizzled out, and they did well to get a Day 2 pick back in return. It's also worth remembering that the Commanders were consolidating, collecting as many assets as possible to entice their preferred general manager and head coaching hires.

It's been a rollercoaster ever since for Young, but the Saints never lost faith in his capabilities. They've now won four straight after being in contention for the No. 1 pick in 2026 once upon a time. Things are surprisingly looking up, and even though the defensive end has missed time on the health front, there is still a chance he can grow even further entering his prime.

Commanders fans did not see this coming from Young. But make no mistake; they were right to get rid of him at the time.
