Dyami Brown sends telling signal that this Commanders return is different

Dyami Brown believes the Washington Commanders will be getting a different player this time around after some harsh lessons were learned during his ill-fated season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the first day of training camp, fans got another example of this mindset in action.

It was a decent opening day overall for Brown, based on the reports of those in attendance. The wide receiver made a highlight-reel catch and looked sharp throughout the session. However, what happened after was perhaps even more encouraging.

According to team writer Zach Selby, Brown was spotted staying behind after practice with some of Washington's defensive backs to work on his separation skills. Though it's a small detail in the grand scheme of things, it shows how hard the North Carolina product is working to make the most of his second chance in Washington.

There is also an opening for Brown or any other wideout behind Terry McLaurin on the depth chart to step up.

Most of the options available have talent, but they are inexperienced or lack the genuine consistency needed. Even though training camp is still in its infancy, the 2021 third-round pick is displaying the sort of application that is unlikely to go unnoticed by the coaching staff.

Again, that matters.

Brown was rewarded for finally producing the goods with a decent contract in Jacksonville last spring. But as has typically been the case over his career, he started well before fading into irrelevancy. The Commanders think there is still something left to salvage, and the added urgency of a make-or-break year is spurring him on even further.

The pass-catcher already has a chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels, which he's rekindled both over Washington's offseason program and workouts away from the team. Brown knows the magnitude of his predicament, so putting in the hard yards now could make things a lot easier when it comes to the crunch.

Fans are still treating Brown's status with cautious optimism. They've been burned by his strong summer performances before, so getting it done when the real action begins is all that matters. Earning that right is the first challenge, and going above and beyond what's required is only going to serve him well.

Brown is a hard guy to root against. It's why fans never stopped believing, and they were eventually rewarded during Washington's memorable run to the NFC Championship game in 2024. Now, he's back, and there is renewed determination to make this opportunity work in his favor.

And make no mistake; Brown should not be counted out by any stretch of the imagination.
