The Washington Commanders are gearing up for what promises to be a franchise-defining offseason. There are numerous tough decisions ahead for those in power, but head coach Dan Quinn doesn't appear to be on the hot seat despite a dismal 2025 run.
Quinn is a respected leader who's never lost the locker room, even amid such a disastrous campaign. That's arguably the biggest reason why he's not feeling the heat right now, although he also earned enough good graces last season to get the benefit of the doubt.
There is no denying that Quinn has made mistakes this season. The injuries haven't helped, but the momentum is evaporating rapidly. The leash is tighter, and the margin for error is diminishing, so everything has to go right in the coming months.
Commanders are expected to move forward with head coach Dan Quinn in 2026
Dianna Russini of The Athletic confirmed that Quinn is expected to return to Washington in 2026. However, the senior insider thought there could be plenty of changes beneath him on the coaching staff when it's all said and done.
"Commanders coach Dan Quinn is expected back for the 2026 season, though changes to the offense and the defense remain possible after Washington has slumped to a 4-12 record. Quinn took over defensive play calling from Joe Whitt Jr. in early November. The Commanders likely won’t make any final decisions until they see how the broader coaching market develops."Dianna Russini
This isn't breaking news to fans. They've known for some time that Quinn would be back. They also saw the writing on the wall regarding defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. How the Commanders go about replacing the play-caller is the big mystery.
Quinn needs better luck on the health front. He needs better quality across the roster. He has not lost the belief of coaches or fans right now, but that will change if the Commanders struggle again in 2026.
The equity was built in Year 1 under Quinn's leadership. That's now gone, so rebuilding confidence and ensuring this campaign is nothing more than a blip are the most critical objectives.
The relationship between Quinn and general manager Adam Peters remains strong. Things might be more strained behind the scenes, but they are both complicit in the team's failure to meet loftier expectations. What's important is turning the page and doing what's needed to get this organization on a much sounder footing.
If not, the Commanders might clean house when the 2027 offseason arrives.
