Commanders may be preparing a not-so-jolly holiday surprise for Joe Whitt

This seems almost like a foregone conclusion.

There will be an investigation into the Washington Commanders' failures this season. Even though inside reports suggest that head coach Dan Quinn's job is safe, it would be a surprise if there wasn't some collateral damage elsewhere on the staff.

Quinn earned enough good graces last season to get the benefit of the doubt. There are things he would have done differently if given the chance, but he was facing a severe injury storm throughout. He'll get another year at least, especially considering how much belief remains in his capabilities across the locker room and from those in positions of power.

That won't be the case for everybody. According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from the NFL Network, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. is firmly on the chopping block.

NFL insiders don't believe Joe Whitt Jr. will be back with the Commanders in 2026

The respected insiders thought Whitt was unlikely to return next season. And when push comes to shove, he might not be the only member of staff who will be looking for alternative employment this offseason.

"That doesn't mean there won't be changes. After a brutal first half of the season on defense, [Dan] Quinn took over play-calling duties from his longtime assistant Joe Whitt Jr., who seems unlikely to return as defensive coordinator. A season like this puts everything under evaluation. Other staff changes are possible, and it's virtually certain there will be a significant overhaul to one of the NFL's oldest rosters in hopes of rebounding in 2026."

This won't come as a great shock to Commanders fans. Whitt was demoted from defensive play-calling duties earlier this season after another porous campaign from his unit. Quinn is a loyal guy, but he felt there was no other option to provide a much-needed spark.

Although improvements have been minor at best, this sort of move typically only leads to one thing after the season. Whitt knew the change was coming. He's still part of the planning process, but the no-nonsense coach is all too aware of what will probably come next once Washington's final two games are done with.

Who the Commanders choose to replace him is anyone's guess. Several in-house candidates could be considered, and Quinn hasn't ruled out taking charge of the defense once again in 2026. Even so, it's clear that a fresh injection of ideas and energy is needed to get this franchise back on track. And there will never be a better time.

Things will look different when Washington's preparations for the 2026 campaign begin. And it's doubtful Whitt is going to come along for the ride.
