There is no movement so far, and there probably won't be.

Daron Payne will be a big part of the Washington Commanders next season. Beyond that? Nobody could say for sure.

And the defensive lineman's blunt message at organized team activities only confirmed what fans had known for months.

General manager Adam Peters quickly put to rest speculation about Payne's future this offseason. Rumors were swirling in the media around the veteran being either traded or released, which didn't seem smart in the grand scheme of things. Washington's front-office leader agreed, stating there would be no movement whatsoever.

Daron Payne focused on football as Commanders assess his future beyond 2026

Payne will stay. He also won't get another extension in advance. That makes it a contract year, and the same situation in 2022 went well. The former Alabama standout is already acting differently, with an added sense of urgency around his 2026 performance.

Inevitably, Payne was asked about his contract status during his OTA media availability. Without saying much, the interior force made it clear that he is focused on football and the more important things in life. Everything after that is out of his hands.

"I'm just playing football, man. I'm hopeful for that. Hopeful to wake up the next day and do what I love with my baby girl, that's all I'm hopeful for."

And when asked about whether there had been contact between the Commanders and Payne's representatives over a new contract...

"Not that I know of."

It might sound a little vague, but it should not come as a great shock.

Peters has his faults, but he sticks to his guns.

There is conviction in everything he does. If he believes letting Payne play out his contract year before taking further action is the right course, he won't deviate. And if the player had a problem with it, he wouldn't have shown up to voluntary OTAs.

Everyone seems on board with the plan. Payne has the incentive to earn another massive payday, and he's already showing the resolve to do so. This approach also protects the Commanders' financial flexibility.

If Peters had given Payne a deal and he underperformed, they'd have been stuck with a big contract without the production to back it up. That would have been a much graver problem to overcome.

Everything is set in stone for 2026. Payne will lead the charge in Washington's defensive trenches alongside Javon Kinlaw and free-agent signing Tim Settle Jr. As one of the team's longest-serving players, he's continuously evolving as a leader, and that won't change. But in terms of a new deal? The one-time Pro Bowler will have to wait.

And it could legitimately go either way.
