All eyes were on Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters during his media availability at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. The front-office leader isn't known for giving too much away, but there were a few useful tidbits regarding some important topics for fans to debate.
And Peters wasted no time in confirming the way forward around one of the most contentious issues of the offseason.
Big changes are expected across the Commanders' roster this spring. Not every free agent is going to be let go, as evidenced by the new deals for Pro Bowl punter Tress Way and versatile offensive lineman Andrew Wylie. But anything less than significant alterations to the playing personnel is not going to be looked upon favorably after how things unfolded for Washington in 2025.
Adam Peters confirms Daron Payne will be back with Commanders in 2026
There are also some established stars whose futures were hanging in the balance. One of those was defensive tackle Daron Payne, who's got one more year remaining on his deal. He was touted as a potential trade or release candidate, though some reports said the Commanders would let him play out the season before deciding on further measures.
When probed about Payne's future, Peters declared his excitement about getting him back for the upcoming campaign. However, the interior force would not secure another lucrative financial commitment in advance.
This confirmed what Commanders fans had already figured out. The savings attached to Payne's departure were no doubt tempting, but the gaping hole he would leave is even more vital to new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
If Jones moves to a 3-4 base front as expected, Payne could thrive as a 3-4 defensive end. The Pro Bowler may not have ever reached the heights of his 2022 campaign again, but seeing if this production can surge in a contract year seems fair in the circumstances.
Payne has proven he can produce the goods when there is a strong supporting cast around him. The Commanders were lacking in that regard last season, and Peters is looking to change that this time around. Standing pat on his contract should provide the urgency needed to leave no doubt about his importance to the franchise moving forward.
This puts one issue to rest, for now at least. But make no mistake; the gauntlet has been laid down to Payne. Either he dominates every phase and remains consistent, or the Commanders will find someone who can in 2027.
It's that simple. But for now, Payne is getting the benefit of the doubt.
