Daron Payne is fighting to get a new contract from the Washington Commanders this season. And early indications from training camp suggest this added urgency is not going unnoticed.
Payne is a formidable presence on the interior of Washington's defensive line when firing on all cylinders. He didn't make the best impression in 2025, but that can be said of every player on defense. Now, there is a new system being installed by Daronte Jones, and the former Alabama standout is forcing everyone to take notice.
The one-time Pro Bowler is causing havoc against Washington's offensive line. He is getting more push than most, looking explosive off the snap and showing a real willingness to buy in. It's still early days, but having a motivated Payne will be a significant asset when competitive action commences.

Speculation rose about Payne's future this offseason. Some were tabbing him as a possible trade or release candidate, but general manager Adam Peters opted to stand pat. There remains faith in the 2018 first-round pick, but he has to earn a new deal just like everybody else.
Not for the first time in his career, Payne is responding positively to the challenge.
The last time Payne was in a contract year, he gained 11.5 sacks and earned a lucrative $90 million contract for his efforts. Things haven't gone nearly as well since, but the Commanders still believe he can become a dominant force with Jones leading the charge.

It's so far, so good on that front.
Payne will have to do much more to justify another lengthy and substantial financial commitment from the Commanders. He's the longest-serving defensive player and a growing locker-room leader. But the performances have to match the hype, and he knows it.
Bigger measuring sticks are also coming for Payne.
The Commanders will put the pads on for the first time at camp on Monday, which is where those in the trenches get found out one way or another. This is where the lineman needs to turn the screw, which is a small yet integral step en route to strengthening his position at the bargaining table if (or when) negotiations begin.
Peters quickly shut down rumors about Payne's status. The player was on board and didn't make things difficult by holding out. There is a mutual willingness to let things play out before taking things further. And perhaps this can also provide the spark that ignites the established pro back among the league's best.
That's a lot to ask of Payne, but stranger things have happened.
