Jayden Daniels' second NFL season was a disaster. The Washington Commanders quarterback couldn't generate any prolonged momentum as injuries took hold. This was a massive setback, but nobody in the building has lost faith in the signal-caller.
That was made abundantly clear by head coach Dan Quinn, who threw his support behind Daniels as he gears up for a critical Year 3 of his professional career.
The Commanders took Daniels at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft for a reason. They were convinced he could be their franchise-caliber presence under center. His historic rookie exploits propelled him to superstardom, but things came crashing back down to earth last time around. That reduces the margin for error, but Quinn remains highly confident.
Dan Quinn believes Jayden Daniels can spearhead Commanders' renaissance in 2026
During a recent conversation on FOX Sports' debate show First Things First, Quinn highlighted Daniels' competitive streak as something that truly sets him apart. The coach also thought the scheme shift under new offensive coordinator David Blough could take the former LSU star's game to even greater heights.
"I think he's just remarkable. In this offense, he'll be under center some more. Some of the big play passes, shots down the field. He's got a very strong arm. He's really accurate. And then, with his ability to create on the run, there's no telling where he's going to go.
"We just think this guy is an absolute savage of a competitor. We love what he brings to us. He, me, as his coach, have a lot to prove, but we're excited to see where it goes."
Last season stung everyone connected to the Commanders. Daniels saw doubts come his way for the first time as Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Bo Nix all reached the postseason. That won't have gone unnoticed, and it'll only inspire him further to remind the world why he entered the elite category almost immediately.
Staying healthy is key. Whether this involves changing his playing style slightly or Blough manipulating his scheme to better insulate the quarterback remains to be seen. But if Daniels can put a consistent run of games together next season, the Commanders will be a team to watch.
Adding to his supporting cast will only help. Reports indicate that the Commanders will target a wide receiver early in the draft. Another running back couldn't be dismissed, and there is the lingering speculation regarding a reunion between Daniels and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk when his saga with the San Francisco 49ers eventually concludes.
Either way, the Commanders will only go as far as Daniels takes them. Quinn left no doubt that last season was a blip, and brighter days are coming once again.
The sooner that happens, the better.
