Head coach Dan Quinn liked what he saw from the Washington Commanders over their early offseason program. But it was also clear that a few critical decisions are still hanging in the balance.

And there is one camp showdown that already looks set to become a massive summer talking point.

Washington's offense should be more exciting next season. Quinn let Kliff Kingsbury go, replacing him with rookie play-caller David Blough. This brings significant intrigue, but questions are being asked about the supporting cast around quarterback Jayden Daniels during the pre-camp break.

That is not an opinion shared in the building. But as far as the running back dynamic goes, Quinn is seemingly no closer to figuring out how this particular dynamic will shake out.

While Quinn was encouraged with what he saw from everyone vying for spots or important roles, there are also unknowns. The coach wasn't giving too much away, but he did hint that more than one option will be relied upon heavily when competitive action commences.

"I think it's probably some main guys in certain parts where it's not maybe be one person, you know, the entire time. But I do like the competition in the group. To see Bill [RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt], to see the guys get back into the mix, to see the two young running backs, what they can add. I don't know yet, but I think we'll for sure be more than just one."

This is smart. Adopting a committee approach is an ongoing trend around the league. Only a few teams have legitimate, elite-level running backs capable of shouldering the burden alone. Blough has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, and if he can find the correct formula, this will quickly become a tone-setting asset.

Just how the pieces will mold together is undetermined.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt and free-agent signing Rachaad White look like the top two candidates as things stand. Sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen can become the ground-and-pound physical presence in short-yardage situations, though he is aiming for much more as his career progresses. After that, Jerome Ford, Jeremy McNichols, and undrafted free agent Robert Henry Jr. are fighting for the remaining spots.

General manager Adam Peters raised competition for places this offseason. The backfield was no exception, and even though he will play a role in the roster decision-making process, the coaches' input will be invaluable before attention turns to Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Everyone is getting their shot to prove themselves. Everyone believes they can be a big piece of Washington's puzzle. Things should become clearer over training camp and the preseason, but it's a great problem to have for the Commanders.

Those who shine will be rewarded. But either way, this increased urgency will only help make everyone better when push comes to shove.
