The Washington Commanders have gone about their business methodically and aggressively in equal measure this offseason. This was no more evident than during the 2026 NFL Draft.
General manager Adam Peters didn't have many picks, especially in the top 100. A strong free agency meant he didn't need to force the issue, letting the board play out in front of him and striking with conviction when prospects of interest were available. And the returns received widespread approval from experts.
Some first-year players are already generating more hype than others, which is typically the case at this time of year. Even so, head coach Dan Quinn fueled the buzz around one unfancied player whom he believes can make a significant impact if the required development arrives.
Dan Quinn believes Kaytron Allen can bring something different to Commanders' backfield
During a conversation with Eric Williams of FOX Sports, Quinn highlighted how sixth-round running back Kaytron Allen brings something a little different to what the Commanders already have in their backfield. There is excitement in the building, and the coach is eager to see how things shake out over the summer.
"He has good size and likes to get downhill. Having another back that has size, can put his foot in the ground and be aggressive, those are the styles of running backs that carry. We’re excited to put him in the mix and let the whole thing kind of develop."
The early reports around Allen have been glowing. Those in attendance at Washington's rookie minicamp were impressed by his size, power, and balance during practices. The player's production over his final two years at Penn State offers even more reason for encouragement.
Allen isn't the most dynamic runner. He doesn't have elite breakaway speed, and he wouldn't be classed as a game-changing force by any stretch. However, he looks like a ready-made replacement for Chris Rodriguez Jr., another sixth-round selection who departed the club in free agency for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jerome Ford, and Jeremy McNichols already in a crowded backfield, that might be all the Commanders need.
The first objective has been achieved. Allen's left a good impression during his early transition, and he's got the eye of Quinn. There is a long way to go, but all signs point to the incoming rookie not only securing his roster spot, but he could also attain an early down role as Washington's power option from the moment he steps onto the field in a regular-season setting.
If that objective is achieved, Allen could end up being among the draft's biggest steals when it's all said and done.
