The early reports were glowing.

The Washington Commanders got a good look at their incoming first-year hopefuls at the team's rookie minicamp. It was only their initial introduction to the demands, but reporters in attendance noted that the schedule was more loaded than usual.

The two-day event is always a source of great excitement. But for one intriguing draft pick, it didn't take long for him to make a lasting impression.

Washington was reportedly high on Jeremiyah Love, and the Notre Dame running back would have been a difficult proposition to turn down if he'd made his way down to No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. That never came close to becoming a reality, but general manager Adam Peters found value a little further down the board.

Commanders insider came away impressed by Kaytron Allen at rookie minicamp

There is already an enormous amount of intrigue around what sixth-round pick Kaytron Allen could bring to the backfield dynamic. He may not be the fastest or most elusive, but he offers something others in the running back room do not. And it's something the Commanders lost when Chris Rodriguez Jr. left for the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.

JP Finlay of NBC Sports came away impressed by Allen, especially his body control and overall power. And if he continues to prove his worth as a short-yardage option, the team insider believes his path to a roster spot is pretty straightforward.

"Nobody was wearing pads at rookie camp so there was no contact, but Allen does an excellent job of keeping his shoulders square even as he turns. You can also see in his body, he’s a bigger guy but carries it well.

"The path to a roster spot for Fatman is prove to be a capable short yardage back. He looks the part. He did have a drop on a pass out of the backfield, but hard to know how good the pass was either."

Allen will be aiming for much higher. The former Penn State standout believes he can impact the rotation immediately, especially on early downs. Washington also has Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jerome Ford, and Jeremy McNichols to call upon, but the rookie's introduction adds another fascinating element to watch over the summer.

Tempering expectations would be wise initially. Allen is coming off two exceptional years of production with the Nittany Lions, and his impressive minicamp will provide extra confidence. Keeping this up when the rookies link up with the veterans is a different challenge, but he's off to a good start nonetheless.

The man fondly known as Fatman isn't coming to make up the numbers. Allen wants to make his presence felt, and don't be surprised if he achieves this objective much sooner than anticipated.
