The Washington Commanders promoted David Blough to offensive coordinator despite his lack of NFL play-calling experience. But the man who was attempting to lure the well-respected figure away from the franchise believes head coach Dan Quinn has pulled off a masterstroke.
Most in the media labeled Blough's appointment as a massive risk that Quinn is betting his job on. That might be the case, but the hire has been much better received around the league.
Everyone has to start somewhere. Everyone gets their first chance as an NFL coach, as a coordinator, or even as a head coach. Everyone who hires them takes a leap of faith, and if it works out, the organization is in incredible shape moving forward.
Dan Campbell believes Commanders have pulled off something big with David Blough
The Commanders moved swiftly on Blough after the Detroit Lions submitted an interview request for their own offensive coordinator position. Head coach Dan Campbell revealed during his media availability at the NFL Scouting Combine that he wanted to bring him into the fold, and he thinks Quinn has made the right call by taking a chance on someone he has a great deal of respect for.
"I love [David] Blough. He was one of the guys I wanted to bring in, and Coach [Dan] Quinn brought him in at OC, which is smart of them. I’ve been around him in this league, and he’s sharp, man. He’s a detailed guy, and he’s competitive, very competitive. I think he’s going to do a great job."Dan Campbell
Some fans remain skeptical about Blough's appointment. But comments like this should be enough to win them around.
Campbell isn't the only one who has spoken highly of Blough after the news was confirmed. Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is another who was gushing in his praise of the former quarterback. It was clear to him from a long way out that a coaching future beckoned, and the Commanders have decided to fast-track him into a prominent position much sooner than expected.
It doesn't change the fact that this move represents a risk from Quinn. At the same time, he deserves credit for going against the grain, thinking outside the box in pursuit of improved fortunes.
Everyone is on board and aligned on a vision for how best to take the offense forward. And if Campbell is right, this could be the spark that ignites Washington back to life sooner rather than later.
Confidence is high in Blough. This bold gamble from Quinn just might be daring enough to work.
