Sonny Styles is carrying a heavy burden. The Washington Commanders placed a significant wager on the prolific linebacker by taking him at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Fans and coaches are expecting immediate results.
This responsibility isn't lost on Styles. Instead of running from the pressure, he's running to it, eager to cement his status as a potential franchise cornerstone sooner rather than later.
And his teammates have already taken notice.
The Commanders were immensely high on Styles throughout their pre-draft assessments. Whether it was his exceptional production at Ohio State, his historic athletic testing at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, or the high regard teammates and coaches had for his intelligence and leadership, every box was ticked. These traits have already been showcased during his early transition into the pros.
Commanders rookie Sonny Styles already drawing rave comparisons from teammates
Big-money signing Odafe Oweh is suitably impressed, and he's played with a few quality linebackers. The edge rusher has high hopes for Styles, even making a bold proclamation that only heightens anticipation for what's to come.
"He's like a baby Bobby Wagner. Just in his stature and the way he's moving. And he's smart. He can articulate himself well. Communicate the defense. Command the huddle and all that stuff, so he's got a bright future. I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops and who he becomes."

High praise, indeed.
The Commanders didn't bring Bobby Wagner back this offseason. He'd been a major asset for two years, but the relationship had run its course. For all his qualities, he is too slow now and often exposed in isolation. Washington will have no such problems with Styles.
He is an electrifying three-level threat on defense who can do it all. Styles is bigger, faster, and more dynamic than Wagner. He may not have the experience just yet, but the upgrade is undeniable at this late stage of the future first ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer's career. And the entire dynamic in Washington's linebacker room has shifted dramatically.
With Styles joining Frankie Luvu, Jordan Magee, and free-agent signing Leo Chenal, there is speed, aggression, and purpose. For a group that was often taken apart last season, it could now become an area the Commanders can depend upon for strength and consistent playmaking when it counts.
Styles will lead the charge. The Commanders are making him earn it, but it's only a matter of time. If experienced pros like Oweh are speaking about him so glowingly, it speaks volumes about how seamlessly he's fit in so far.
The Commanders believe they got a gift from the football gods when Styles dropped out of the top five and into their laps.
Based on early impressions, they might be right.
