After so much speculation linking free-agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Washington Commanders this offseason, it wouldn't be classed as an overlooked destination if general manager Adam Peters eventually gives this option the green light.
Even so, that is precisely what Alex Kay from The Bleacher Report called the Commanders when it comes to Diggs' next landing spot. And the analyst believes this could be the addition that turns Washington's offense from intriguing to a complete nightmare.
And he might be right.
"The Commanders have been working to surround their signal-caller with established talent as they gear up to chase another deep playoff run, but have thus far failed to add a reliable pass-catcher to the mix. Signing Diggs will make Washington a matchup nightmare for opposing secondaries while also providing a much-needed veteran presence in what is a relatively young receiver room."
Stefon Diggs is still a hot name, but the Commanders have not budged
Diggs put his cards on the table pretty early in the offseason. He was intrigued by a homecoming, and the former Maryland playmaker wanted the chance to speak with the Commanders about the possibility. That hasn't happened, with Washington opting to keep faith with the options around right now rather than seek additional assistance.
Just how much longer that continues is debatable. But even on last season's form, Diggs would be an instant — albeit short-term — upgrade to the WR2 spot opposite Terry McLaurin.
There is a danger of Diggs becoming a distraction if he isn't getting enough targets. He's also got another off-the-field matter to resolve. But if the Commanders were basing this on pure ability alone, this is still among the more viable options on the market.
Diggs should be experienced enough to know he wouldn't be the top dog in Washington. That title is held by McLaurin until further notice, but having such an exceptional performer taking away attention could free up space for him to work as a complementary piece. Couple this with him being a Maryland native, and it's not hard to see why this would be alluring.
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler recently reported that the Commanders are looking for more speed rather than an aging veteran. That narrows down the options and takes Diggs off the table, but nobody really knows what Peters is seeking, if he's seeking anything at all.
The answer will become clearer shortly. It's been an exhausting offseason where every free agent with a big name has been touted to the Commanders. Brandon Aiyuk is another option, but that doesn't seem all that likely right now.
Diggs is a safer bet, and fans are coming around to the possibility. Whether Peters agrees is another matter.
