General manager Adam Peters wanted to prioritize the edge-rushing position this offseason. The Washington Commanders managed to get their hands on one of the top free agents on the open market by agreeing to terms with Odafe Oweh.
And this could shake up the Commanders' plans considerably at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Oweh fits the profile of what Daronte Jones is looking for on the defensive edge. The Commanders have reportedly paid a premium to get him into the building — four years, $100 million with $68 million guaranteed. But it's got the scope to completely shift the defensive dynamic if he hits the ground running.
Washington also struck deals with cornerback Amik Robertson and ascending defensive lineman Tim Settle to kick off their legal tampering period. More arrivals are on the way, but some clues are starting to emerge about how Peters plans to utilize his first-round pick this spring.
Commanders still have a big decision to make at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft
Taking another edge couldn't be ruled out entirely. Dorance Armstrong Jr. is coming off a serious knee injury and is embarking on the final year of his deal. If David Bailey or Rueben Bain Jr. are still on the board when Washington goes on the clock, it's something those in power will consider.
These defensive reinforcements provide some extra freedom. They haven't signed a linebacker yet, which could mean Sonny Styles is firmly on their radar. There is also the possibility of taking an offensive prospect, and head coach Dan Quinn has already spoken glowingly of Notre Dame running back Jeramiyah Love.
Whether he'll be around is anyone's guess. Wide receiver Carnell Tate is another option. And if the Commanders are still looking for a game-changing safety by the time the draft comes around, Caleb Downs is another strong option to ponder.
No team can ever have enough good edge rushers. Oweh was the big fish Washington managed to land. The club also re-signed Deatrich Wise Jr. and Drake Jackson to bolster depth. Jacob Martin is also a candidate for re-signing if the money works, but it seems like Von Miller's time with the Commanders has come to an end.
Almost everyone expected the Commanders to prioritize their defense. Peters duly obliged, and he's just getting started. The front office leader also highlighted his intent to take the best prospect available at No. 7 regardless of need. A few more notable additions could provide him with the luxury to do just that.
It's a fascinating dynamic already causing significant debate among the fan base. But make no mistake; it's a decision Peters simply cannot get wrong.
