Fans and respected insiders were expecting fireworks from the Washington Commanders when the legal tampering window opened. General manager Adam Peters is under immense scrutiny after things completely fell apart in 2025. Fortunately, he had the financial flexibility needed to cause a stir.

And it didn't take long for the pieces around the league to start falling into place.

Peters focused his attention on one-year deals for aging veterans and two bold trades last offseason. After things fell flat, a shift in approach was required. Based on Washington's early activity, the message has been read loud and clear.

Commanders bring back a familiar face to fortify their defensive trenches in free agency

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Commanders have convinced Tim Settle that this is the project for him after agreeing to terms on a three-year, $24 million deal that could be worth up to $25.5 million. The tone-setting defensive lineman is no stranger to the franchise, having been chosen in the fifth-round by the club in 2018.

Now, he gets the chance to fortify the trenches on Daronte Jones' unit.

Settle came into free agency with real momentum after a standout 2025 campaign with the Houston Texans. The AFC South club reportedly wanted to keep him around, but nothing was worked out beforehand. Once he got the chance to test the market, it didn't take long for the Commanders to pounce.

And Washington gets better immediately.

While acquiring the former Virginia Tech star wasn't cheap, but this could be the missing piece if Jones moves to a 3-4 base front as expected. The popular figure is a maximum-effort guy who will breathe new life into Washington's defense, both on and off the field. And the cost is relatively team-friendly.

The Commanders are not one piece away from contending. Settle should have a considerable impact, bringing some much-needed power and energy to the defensive front. He's also ascending at the right time, so this represents a sound investment in the present and the future if everything goes according to plan.

More is needed. At the same time, ticking off one glaring need with Settle is a good start. And with the likes of cornerback Amik Robertson and edge rusher Odafe Oweh also committing to the club, the pieces are slowly coming together.

People around the league were watching Peters closely. Bold moves were expected as the Commanders look to maximize Jayden Daniels' rookie contract. The front-office leader getting a player with Settle's upsdie into the fold only whets the appetite further about what is to come.

Settle should thrive during his second stint in Washington. And the Commanders deserve enormous credit for striking with conviction to give Jones' chances a significant shot in the arm at the best possible time.

Something that raised optimism among the fan base exponentially along the way.
