The Washington Commanders have added two new wide receivers to the squad over the first wave of free agency. More acquisitions could be on the way, which is imperative as general manager Adam Peters looks to maximize the rookie contract window of quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Drastic measures were needed after an underwhelming 2025 campaign. The Commanders are off to a good start, but the hard work is just beginning. That led one NFL analyst to suggest a wideout drafted by Peters could be on the chopping block in the not-too-distant future.

Luke McCaffrey remains something of an unknown quantity as a pass-catcher two years into his NFL career. He was always going to be a work in progress, but the Commanders cannot wait much longer before they turn their focus elsewhere.

NFL analyst believes Commanders could potentially trade Luke McCaffrey during the draft

Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports thought McCaffrey could be a sneaky trade candidate for the Commanders during the draft. The analyst added that the numbers game might be working against the wideout, and a fresh start elsewhere could be precisely what he needs to fulfill his potential.

"There won’t be enough room for every receiver to stay on the active roster, so it shouldn’t be surprising if [Luke] McCaffrey is viewed as a “sleeper” trade candidate during this upcoming NFL Draft. Despite suffering a season-ending collarbone injury to end his 2025 campaign, he has the talent to turn into one of the most elusive receivers in today’s game."

This would be surprising. McCaffrey is expected to progress this offseason, potentially into a more focal-point role in the slot. Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson Jr., and Treylon Burks also have the same ambition. Jaylin Lane is another with upside, so it'll be fascinating to watch this dynamic shake out in the coming months.

McCaffrey could be scratching the surface of what he's truly capable of. The former Rice standout was on course for Pro Bowl consideration as a kick returner before getting hurt. He's also on a cheap contract, so unless it's an offer well above Peters' potential valuation, trading him doesn't make a ton of sense.

Nothing should be dismissed entirely, but one or two currently on the squad may be out of luck when the 53-man roster is finalized. The Commanders remain strongly linked to Brandon Aiyuk when he is eventually released by the San Francisco 49ers. There is a chance Peters adds another veteran receiver, given the available cash. He also has six picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, but only two of those are in the first four rounds.

More new faces will only raise the stakes. McCaffrey needs to take on the challenge to cement his status with the club. But based on his work ethic since landing in Washington, he looks more than capable.
