The Washington Commanders could get more than they bargained for with running back Kaytron Allen. And his rapid surge over the offseason has the league's attention.
Allen may have emerged as Penn State's all-time leading rusher, but his NFL outlook was seen as murky. He lacks legitimate game-breaking explosiveness, and his pass-blocking needs refinement. That was enough to put teams off, but general manager Adam Peters saw something in the player that can potentially be molded into a productive contributor.
He might be right.
Looking at the way Allen has gone about his business so far, one cannot help but be impressed. His application, work ethic, and ability to maximize every opportunity have already come across. He's an ambitious guy, and even though the Commanders will probably utilize free-agent signing Rachaad White and Jacory Croskey-Merritt ahead of him, the first-year pro could still have a role to play.

Gary Davenport of The Bleacher Report is among those who believe Allen's relentless mindset and physical running style can offer something different to the Commanders. He may be overlooked right now, but the analyst didn't think that would be the case for much longer if he shines enough over the summer.
"The Commanders have already shown they will hand a large role in the backfield to a rookie. Last year, Jacory Croskey-Merritt went from a seventh-round pick to the lead back in the nation's capital. This isn't to say Allen will immediately usurp Croskey-Merritt in that role in 2026. But given his punishing running style, it would not be a surprise if Allen eventually claimed a larger share of the workload."
Allen has a shot. Tempering expectations initially would be wise, but the rookie is confident he can make an impression if chances come his way.
The Commanders will likely deploy a committee approach in their backfield under new offensive coordinator David Blough. White and Croskey-Merritt have the tools to become a dynamic 1-2 punch, but Washington needs someone to take the heat off in short-yardage situations and in the red zone. Though he is aiming for much more, Allen can fill this void after Chris Rodriguez Jr. left for the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.
The No. 187 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft has been looking forward to the pads going on at training camp. This is where Allen believes he can separate himself from the pack, so he'll be a player to watch closely. And if his positive recent momentum is built upon, the Commanders will reward him accordingly.
Time will tell on that one. But for Allen, it's been so far, so good up to now.
