The Washington Commanders continue to navigate what has become a rather difficult wide receiver situation, thanks to the stalemate involving the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk.
In the meantime, the team must make do with its existing pass-catching options, including a new addition poised for a breakout.
For the past few years, the Commanders have been heavily reliant on the tight end position to provide consistent production in the short passing game. Quarterback Jayden Daniels built up a strong connection with veteran Zach Ertz, but the three-time Pro Bowler tore his ACL late last year and might just be finished in the NFL, let alone in Washington.
Recognizing the need for change, the Commanders signed Chig Okonkwo from the Tennessee Titans. It feels like a star turn is on the horizon.
Chig Okonkwo can be the X-factor in the Commanders' revitalized offense
Commanders' new offensive coordinator David Blough comes from the Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson coaching tree. If there's one thing everyone should know about that scheme, it's that it loves to use tight ends.
Sam LaPorta is the heartbeat of the Detroit Lions' offense. A major part of the Chicago Bears' success last season was the 1-2 punch of Colston Loveland and Coke Kmet. It's not hard to connect the dots here.
In Okonkwo, the Commanders have a bit of a mystery to solve.
The former Maryland Terrapins standout has never played on an offense even resembling a good one. Okonkwo's quarterbacks throughout his career have been aging Ryan Tannehill and three thus-far underwhelming youngsters in Will Levis, Malik Willis, and Cam Ward. In his four seasons in Tennessee, the Titans ranked 30th, 28th, 26th, and 31st in offensive yards.
Now, Okonkwo is going to catch passes from Jayden Daniels in a system where he might very well be the No. 2 pass-catching option.
The Commanders have Rachaad White as a threat out of the backfield. Third-round pick Antonio Williams should also see his fair share of targets, but the 2022 fourth-rounder is a veteran who should be trusted from Day 1.
Okonkwo is an impressively athletic tight end who can shake defenders and rack up yards after the catch. In the best of worlds, he could end up being the most productive tight end the Commanders have had since Jordan Reed.
Adam Peters signed Okonkwo as a high-floor, much younger, and more agile replacement for Ertz. But his ceiling can't be ignored either.
If he is used effectively, the Commanders might have stumbled upon a Pro Bowl-level tight end.
