General manager Adam Peters got to work on signing his undrafted free agent class even before the 2026 NFL Draft concluded. The Washington Commanders have also given plenty of unheralded options a chance to thrive, with many securing places on the active roster as a result of their efforts.
It'll be fascinating to see which UDFA hopefuls come to the fore this summer. But for one NFL analyst, there is a name that stands out above the rest.
And not just because of his size.
NFL analyst believes Jeffrey M'Ba can surprise his way onto Commanders' roster spot
Kristopher Knox of The Bleacher Report thought Jeffrey M'Ba has the best shot of any UDFA acquired by Washington to make the Week 1 squad. Though he is an older rookie, the analyst thought his size, mass, and overall physical traits could be enough to make his presence felt against all odds.
"Jeffrey M'Ba can be part of the overhaul after signing as an UDFA. The 6'5", 316-pound prospect, who played for Auburn, Purdue, and SMU, has the size and skills needed to crack the defensive-line rotation.
"M'Ba is an older rookie at 26 years old, but he has the physical traits and proven production that Washington should want in a rotational defensive tackle. This past season with the Mustangs, M'Ba recorded 42 combined tackles, 5.0 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss."
The Commanders are projected to move into a 3-4 base front under new coordinator Daronte Jones. Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and free-agent signing Tim Settle Jr. will be the starters. Johnny Newton is the pass-rush specialist, with Shy Tuttle and D.J. Davidson also hoping to secure rotational roles.
After that, the well is relatively dry. M'Ba will hope to fill the void, and his ascension after transferring to SMU last season provides a solid platform from which to build.
Washington's staff sees something in M'Ba, but time is of the essence.
He's in his prime now at 26, so there is no margin for error whatsoever. If the interior lineman struggles to adjust, he isn't going to last long. Fortunately, M'Ba's ferocious mindset and high motor give him a good chance of emerging as a pleasant surprise.
The veterans won't be giving up their spots without a fight. M'Ba will be looking to force the issue, and going up against Washington's formidable offensive line will be the best possible way to get up to speed.
It might come to nothing, but there is a quiet sense of optimism regarding a player who has all the makings of a fan favorite.
Let's hope M'Ba can deliver on his growing hype.
