The 2026 NFL Draft is barely in the rearview mirror. However, that hasn't stopped analysts around the media from highlighting the next group of college recruits set to take their chances in the pros next year.
And one way-too-early mock projection has the Washington Commanders targeting a dynamic pass-rusher to further strengthen their defense.
While the 2026 class wasn't looked upon favorably, the opposite is true of the 2027 group. Draft experts are already saying this could be generational, especially at the quarterback position. Not everyone eligible will come out, and they still have another season to get through, but the excitement is palpable nonetheless.
Commanders select edge rusher Colin Simmons in ESPN's early 2027 mock draft
ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid produced a 2027 mock draft. The Commanders were at No. 11 overall, based on the Super Bowl odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. The choice was Texas pass-rusher Colin Simmons, who already appears on the fast track to superstardom after taking college football by storm last season.
"The Commanders just drafted a dynamic linebacker in Sonny Styles, and [Colin] Simmons could be their next defensive playmaker. He operated mainly from a two-point stance last season and had an SEC-leading 12 sacks.
"Simmons can accelerate in a hurry and uses sudden movements to get free of blockers. He's a high-effort, energetic rusher who showcases strong hand swipes to clear the hands of linemen. Establishing counter moves is the next step in Simmons' development, as is increasing his lower-body strength to stand up better against the run."
Obviously, a lot is going to happen between now and then. Stocks will rise and fall based on performance during the college football season and the all-important pre-draft process. And if the Commanders are picking at No. 11, bigger changes may be afoot.
At the same time, it's hard to ignore Simmons' ability.
He is beyond explosive, with the quick-twitch and violent hands needed to cause endless havoc. As Reid stated, there is hard work ahead to improve his ability against the run, but the ceiling is through the roof if Simmons can become a complete package.
This may also be a need for the Commanders.
General manager Adam Peters invested heavily in the edge options this offseason, but only Odafe Oweh and Day 3 pick Joshua Josephs will be under contract. Dorance Armstrong Jr. will be a free agent. K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu both signed one-year deals, so the long-term unknowns are there for all to see.
Of course, these mocks aren't based on accuracy. They are merely for fans to highlight which prospects could be worth monitoring. Simmons might go much higher than No. 11 with another dominant campaign. But if his rapid ascent continues, he'll be on Washington's radar.
But in truth, fans are a long, long way from finding out for sure.
