The Washington Commanders have high hopes for their cornerback unit in 2025. They are powerful with elite-level performers and much-improved depth. If everyone stays healthy, this could be an area of significant strength for the franchise.
It seems, at least from the outside looking in, as if five spots are locked up. The Commanders are implementing four-time Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore and second-round pick Trey Amos as their starting tandem on the boundary. Mike Sainristil is moving back to the slot, and his exceptional contribution throughout training camp so far does nothing to diminish optimism around potential superstardom beckoning.
Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene are other roster locks. That leaves one or two spots for the rest, which makes it a high-stakes situation for everyone else. But there is one unheralded prospect starting to force his way into the team's plans.
Commanders hint that Car'lin Vigers is in the driver's set for shocking roster spot
Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. praised the impact made by undrafted free agent Car'lin Vigers during his media availability on Monday. He was the only one outside of the top five options who received recognition. This could be a subtle clue that he's in the driver's seat to secure the sixth position if the same trend continues.
"Car'lin [Vigers]. He's done a nice job of covering as well. So, I've been pleased with that group."Joe Whitt Jr.
Whitt doesn't dish about undeserving praise. He's a no-nonsense coach who demands excellence from his players, and anyone not pulling their weight is not going to last long. Fortunately for Vigers, he's made a positive early impact.
Vigers has the size and length typically associated with defensive backs in Dan Quinn's system. He's a physical corner who can cover and also make a considerable impact against the run. Coming from Louisiana-Monroe hurt his draft stock, but the player's exceptional performance against Texas last season was enough to suggest some untapped potential lies within.
This is an intriguing development for Vigers, but the biggest tests are to come. He must continue to display consistency during joint practice with the New England Patriots. After that, the first-year pro must prove his dependability in a typical game-day setting when preseason involvement comes his way.
It's a lot to ask, but the Commanders have no room for passengers.
Whitt will push Vigers to his limits and beyond before ultimately deciding his fate. However, don't be surprised if the ambitious cornerback manages to do just enough to stick around when push comes to shove.
