The Washington Commanders managed to finish their campaign on a high note by beating the Philadelphia Eagles, who rested most of their established starters for the playoffs. Head coach Dan Quinn wanted to win for the players and coaches who've given so much in difficult circumstances. But now, some tough choices await those in power.

There is growing speculation about significant changes across the board in Washington. Rumors of a behind-the-scenes disconnect, coupled with general manager Adam Peters having the league's most pending free agents, mean this franchise will look entirely different in a few months.

And the first decision facing the Commanders is painfully apparent.

Commanders must begin offseason overhaul by firing Joe Whitt Jr.

Washington needs a fresh set of ideas on defense. Quinn is a loyal coach — it's one of his most impressive qualities. Even though it'll be a difficult conversation, firing defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. is the best way to take this franchise forward.

Whitt is a respected coach. His work with defensive backs throughout his outstanding career has drawn lavish praise. Unfortunately, his time as a coordinator hasn't gone nearly as well, and Quinn's decision to take over the play-calling responsibilities told fans all they needed to know.

The move didn't bring about many improvements, in all honesty. Washington remained in the bottom tier of almost every statistical category worth noting, so this is also a personnel issue. At the same time, a reset is essential. This starts with implementing a new coordinator who uses a scheme that plays to his primary weapons' strengths.

Just who that'll be is anyone's guess, but the writing is on the wall for Whitt. Those around the league believe he will be made surplus to requirements in the not-too-distant future. He's been around the game long enough to realize what's coming next. And the Commanders have reportedly already devised a shortlist of potential replacements, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Not being around the playoffs stings for Commanders fans, especially after reaching the NFC Championship game in Year 1 under Quinn's leadership. They punched above their weight then, but this season was a lost cause from a long way out. Drastic measures are needed, and it would be surprising if Whitt weren't the first one sacrificed when the dust settles.

Quinn's next hire as defensive coordinator is crucial. He must get it right, and Peters must also do his part by acquiring younger players with more explosiveness and dynamism at all three levels of the field.

Unfortunately, Whitt won't be coming along for the ride.
