Commanders fans are being forced into a Stefon Diggs debate that could get messy

The debate is gathering steam.

Free-agent veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs was found not guilty of assaulting a private chef over a pay dispute. His exoneration paves the way for clubs like the Washington Commanders to pursue him, and the fans and media are warming up to the idea.

The market for Diggs' services should heat up now that the recent off-field issues are resolved. Washington has notably come up as a potential destination for the Gaithersburg, Maryland native, which has had folks divided.

Yet, Kevin Sheehan of The Team 980 is evidently on board.

Sheehan declared himself a "Stefon Diggs fan from [the] standpoint" of sheer will to win and tenacity while also citing valid, well-chronicled character concerns. But ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons: the four-time Pro Bowler is a gamer in every way who addresses a glaring roster hole in Washington.

"I think [Diggs'] as good as a competitor as the game has," Sheehan stated. "He is there on game day. ... A pain in the backside for coaches, for teammates. But short dose, one season, a big season, where there's a team with a need for a No. 2 receiver. For a guy that loves to win — helps you win on Sundays. ... Call me interested in Stefon Diggs."

In fairness, Sheehan has held firm on his stance. This isn't the first time he's highlighted Diggs' incredibly fiery spirit and how it can sometimes be a fault. However, the talent is too much to deny, under the pretense that Washington isn't "making a commitment to beyond 2026."

A polarizing player like Diggs can split a fan base, as the Washington faithful is experiencing firsthand. Some believe he's worth the trouble, and others think his outspoken, unpredictable behavior can destroy a locker room. The truth typically lies somewhere in the middle, though, which is why Sheehan seems so willing to roll the dice.

Despite being heavily connected to the nation's capital, disgruntled San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk doesn't appear to be walking through the door anytime soon. And frankly, the Commanders shouldn't put all of their eggs in his basket. If patience wears thin, Diggs presents a more-than-worthwhile alternative.

There's palpable excitement surrounding Commanders third-round rookie Antonio Williams, and understandably so. But it's hard to envision him immediately stepping into a significant role. Not to mention, he primarily worked in the slot at Clemson; Washington lacks a proven outside option opposite franchise cornerstone Terry McLaurin.
