The Washington Commanders could have a franchise-altering decision at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Does general manager Adam Peters continue with his defensive revolution, or does he add another prolific offensive weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels?
Much will depend on how the board shakes out in front of them. But one respected draft analyst thinks Peters' time with the San Francisco 49ers could lead Washington to Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Love is arguably the best overall prospect in this class. He's a phenomenal player with a Pro Bowl-caliber ceiling from the moment he steps onto an NFL field. Positional value makes his projection sketchy right now. He's being tabbed as going as high as No. 2, while others see him just outside the top 10.
Adam Peters' history in San Francisco could lead Commanders to Jeremiyah Love
If the truth lies somewhere in the middle, ESPN analyst Jordan Reid believes this would be a smart pick by the Commanders. He also thought it was something Peters would strongly consider, given how he was in San Francisco when Christian McCaffrey took the team by storm.
"I think it's a no-brainer, and I think Adam Peters would go down the same route as well. He saw the effect that Christian McCaffrey had in San Francisco when he was there, and I think Jeremiyah Love can be that dynamic type of running back. And it's not just from a rushing attack perspective.
"Jeremiyah Love isn't just a complementary piece in the passing game. You can revolve a passing game around him, similar to what Detroit does with Jahmyr Gibbs. Then you put him alongside Jayden Daniels. Just imagine the one-two punch of those two in the backfield."
Peters held an influential position in the Niners' front office when they gave up significant draft capital to acquire McCaffrey via trade from the Carolina Panthers. This was a risk, especially considering his injury history, but the dual-threat weapon quickly reaffirmed his status among the league's best and a genuine difference-maker in San Francisco.
McCaffrey is an indispensable member of the offensive game plan. Love could be that in Washington. Putting him next to Daniels — an athletically gifted quarterback whose rushing capabilities must always be accounted for — is a tantalizing proposition.
The Commanders would need to get lucky. Several teams ahead of Washington in the pecking order could take this option off the table. But if Love is around, Peters may see this as a gift he cannot waste.
Love wants to be considered among the game's greats. He's a model character with supreme inner drive and the talent to match. This is the sort of prospect that could completely change everything for Daniels, which remains the top objective in Washington to maximize his rookie contract.
And if Love does end up in Washington, the fear around the league will be palpable.
