This was notable.

When ESPN insider Adam Schefter talks, people listen. He's as well-connected as anyone about what's going on around the league, and his latest tidbit will no doubt have the attention of Washington Commanders fans.

And it centers on the Commanders' potential choice at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Commanders gave themselves some extra flexibility by filling needs during an aggressive free agency from general manager Adam Peters. Washington isn't blessed with many high-end picks after trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil last offseason. While the front-office leader will do that again in a heartbeat, it doesn't make his task any easier when the draft rolls around.

Peters wants to take the best prospect available. Being at No. 7 means it's not a pick for need, especially not in this draft. You take whatever game-changing presence you can and worry about the rest later.

Adam Schefter is watching the Commanders closely as Jeremiyah Love speculation soars

During his latest appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Schefter thought the Commanders could end up taking Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. That is the spot he is watching, and pairing the dynamic backfield force with quarterback Jayden Daniels might be too tempting to ignore.

"I know a lot of people have him going to Tennessee. Again, that's not what I'm sensing right now. I don't see him going to the Giants, although that would be an interesting spot. To me, a place that makes sense would be the Washington Commanders. They've added to their running back room. I could see Washington being interested in a player like Jeremiyah Love. Seven would be the spot.

"I know they added Rachaad White and other depth to the running back position, but I still think that if you could pair Jeremiyah Love and Jayden Daniels, that would be dynamic. To me, that's a spot that I'm watching."

As Commanders analyst Mark Bullock rightfully pointed out, when Schefter puts things like this out there, it's not wild speculation. It's worth paying attention to, and there is a good chance Love is high on Washington's list of possibilities.

Obviously, a lot can and will change in the coming weeks. Schefter acknowledged that teams can alter their strategies, and Love may not be available by the time Peters gets his chance to pick. But when there is smoke from Schefter, there is typically fire.

Taking a running back so high is seen as a luxury the Commanders might not be able to afford. They also have Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jerome Ford, and Jeremy McNichols on the books currently. But if Peters believes this is the move that can take pressure off Daniels and Washington's offense to greater heights, he won't hesitate to pull the trigger.

It's a fascinating storyline to watch. But Schefter's comments are extremely noteworthy regarding Love and the Commanders.
