The Washington Commanders are hurting. They are stung and embarrassed by the failings during the previous campaign. And they are going into training camp with the kind of roster tension that fans should welcome.
Let's face it, the 2025 season was a disaster in every conceivable way. Very few emerged with any credit, and dreams of a Super Bowl challenge fell by the wayside very quickly. You can blame the injuries, and they are a viable excuse up to a point, but the atmosphere around the building was way off long before they took the field.
They got complacent. They reveled too much in their sensational run to the NFC Championship game. And they paid a heavy price.
Coommanders' revamped roster has the right kind of edge before training camp
The page has now been turned. The urgency, collective drive, and togetherness are back. There is a real eagerness to right the wrong, and head coach Dan Quinn is keeping standards high to avoid similar complications this time around.
This is precisely what fans wanted to see.
Everyone is on edge. The page has firmly been turned, but every spot, every starting role, and every rep on the rotation must be earned.
And it's received a positive response so far.
Nobody likes losing. The Commanders have done enough of that over recent decades under previous regimes and ownership. Just when it looked like the tide might be turning for the better, standards slipped.
Now, it's about restoring what got the Commanders among the contenders in 2024.
Veteran cornerstones are leading from the front, and everyone else is following. Players are being pushed harder than expected by the coaching staff, and the intensity will ramp up even further when training camp rolls around. The pressure is on, so nothing but major improvements will do.
This doesn't guarantee success. The NFL is a year-to-year league, and the NFC looks especially strong this year. Margins are fine, and any further failures will have some much bigger ramifications attached. But for now, everything is looking up.
Anyone not keeping up or failing to respond to these increased demands won't be part of Washington's plans for much longer. Jobs are on the line, right from the top down. If that's not enough to motivate you, then nothing will.
This will only make the Commanders better. They have talent, and general manager Adam Peters did a tremendous job of strengthening the roster throughout free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft. There is more youth, more energy, and more big-time performers in their prime. If the tone set over early offseason workouts continues into competitive action, not many will get the better of Washington.
And those who do will know they have been in a significant fight.
