By now, the discussion regarding the Washington Commanders' lack of wide receiver depth has been beaten to death. The club hasn't adequately addressed the issue yet; however, Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame wonders if it's time to do so — once and for all.
Verderame insinuated that a Commanders squad aiming to regain contender status in 2026 shouldn't have such a "dire" supporting cast around franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. Alas, here we are. There's "nothing else of note" beyond No. 1 target Terry McLaurin.
With that in mind, Verderame asks if the Commanders take matters into their own hands and "take a big swing," as many have long expected. And frankly, it's hard to blame him, considering a handful of high-profile free agents remain unsigned, including Deebo Samuel Sr., who spent 2025 with Washington.
"With Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, Tyreek Hill and Samuel still available, along with a potential trade for the 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk, Washington has to make a move," Verderame wrote. "While all of those players have drawbacks, whether it's age or off-field concerns, any one of them would immediately give the Commanders' offense a significant jolt."

Look, none of the names mentioned are perfect (no one is), as Verderame touched on. Whether it's durability, effectiveness or non-football questions, or all the above, they each come with their fair share of baggage. All of them are established commodities, though, which is more than any member of Washington's cast of misfits behind McLaurin can say.
Commanders third-round rookie Antonio Williams is a buzzy, albeit unproven option. Last year's fourth-round selection, Jaylin Lane, and 2024 third-rounder Luke McCaffrey haven't been able to carve out meaningful roles. Veterans Treylon Burks and Dyami Brown are fine, if not uninspiring, ancillary pieces.
Does Washington anticipate an in-house player to come out of nowhere and give Daniels the Robin to McLaurin's Batman that they desperately need? If so, that's awfully wishful thinking, seeing as Lane, McCaffrey, Burks and Brown haven't gotten the job done to date.
Seriously, what do the Commanders have to lose? Their current pass-catching situation is borderline untenable at this point. It doesn't matter who they bring in as long as they gamble on one of the many talented but flawed guys on the open market.
The tea leaves suggest retaining Samuel might be off the table. Meanwhile, the Commanders have been hotly linked to four-time Pro Bowler and Maryland native Stefon Diggs, plus the San Francisco 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk.
